In October during Chinese National holidays, Christina and I planned a beautiful trip from Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington and then to Vancouver in Canada. This was an amazing, unforgettable adventure where we camped one night in a forest and one day in a beach and we drove a car on the beautiful 101 route from Portland to Seattle. Travel is my way to learn how the world works, however in this trip I experienced something different. An inverse cultural shock. In comparison with crowled and polluted China, USA and Canada are a virgin deserted natural paradise. Maybe the environment makes people different. I was surprised to find lots of open minded, relaxed and non-stressed cities and people. northwest America
- In Vancouver was our first time riding a tandem and it was a lot of fun. It is not so fun to use it alone though!
- An American house that I particularly building in Portland
- Maple Bacon donut from Voodo Droughnuts @Portland. Disgusting? Open your mind, it is amazing.
- Seattle’s Pike market is amazing. They have the best maccaroni with cheese in the world, the first starbucks and places that are half stores half show
- Jumping at Portland with Luis
- We rode the Amtrak cascades from Seattle to Portland
- Waking up in our beach close to Seaside @ Route 101
- Powell’s books @ Portland is the biggest second hand book store in the world. It is like Amazon, but you can feel and smell the book before buying it.
Highlights of the trip:
- We rented an economic, cheap car. We got a huge American vehicle. We drove it for three days up route 101 following the coast.
- We discover that Walmart doesn’t have fresh fruits/vegetables section. When asked, they point to fruit in cans and frozen vegetables.
- We tasted amazing doughts Vodoo Doughts @ Portland
- We had an outdoors bath in Bagby hotsprings. We were naked in public in America. Legally!
- We camped in a beach looking at the Pacific Ocean
- We drove over the skyhigh bridge that connects Oregon and Washington state.
- We camped next to a creek in a forest and we were close to being eaten alive by bears. Luckily they butchered salmons instead.
- We ate the best cheese macaroni ever and we visited the first Starbuck in the world in the pike market in Seattle
- We had central american food for lunch with Luis in Seattle. It was really good
- We rode the Amtrak from Seattle to Vancouver. Yes, there are trains in America. It was our first trip in a Diesel train because the line is not electrified. Amtrak’s train carts are manufactured by Talgo, an Spanish brand.
- I had a reecounter with Tim Hortons’s boston cream drought but somehow they don’t taste as good for me as some years ago.
- We went to a (heavily uncensored) comedy show. It was my first time in a live comedy show and I really like it!
